With emergency weather season just around the corner, it's crucial to ensure your boat is ready to weather any storm. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you prep your vessel and keep it safe.

  1. Have an Emergency Weather Plan
  • Decide the Best Spot: Figure out if your boat is better off on land or in the water. Each option has its pros and cons depending on the storm’s severity.
  • Keep a Contact List Handy: Make sure you have a list of emergency contacts, including your marina, insurance company, and local authorities.

  1. Secure Your Boat
  •  If On Land: Use a sturdy cradle or trailer, secure it with heavy-duty straps, and consider ground anchors for extra stability.
  •  If In Water: Choose a safe harbor or marina. Use extra mooring lines and set anchors in multiple directions to keep your boat stable. Remove loose items like canvas and sails.

  1. Remove Valuables and Electronics
  • Personal Items: Take all personal belongings, including electronics, documents, and valuables, off the boat.
  • Important Papers: Keep copies of essential documents like registration, insurance policies, and maintenance records in a safe place.

  1. Check and Maintain Your Boat
  • Bilge Pumps: Ensure bilge pumps are operational and have backup batteries ready.
  • Fuel and Water Tanks: Top off fuel tanks to prevent moisture buildup and add stabilizers. Empty water tanks and remove perishables.

  1. Guard Against Water Damage
  • Seal Everything: Close and seal all hatches, portholes, and doors to prevent water from getting in.

  1. Remove Canvas and Upholstery:
  • Store all canvas covers, cushions, and sails to avoid wind damage.

  1. Review Your Insurance Policy
  • Check Your Coverage: Make sure your insurance is up to date and covers hurricane damage. Take photos of your boat for documentation before the storm hits.

  1. Stay Updated
  • Watch the Weather: Keep an eye on forecasts and listen for updates from local authorities.
  • Know Your Evacuation Routes Be aware of evacuation plans and routes in your area.
